Coffee can’t be contained by big cities like Milwaukee, instead this cultural craze with humble beginnings has found its way into small town America. Manitowoc, a blue collar town, is historically known for cranes, shipbuilding and its picturesque setting on the shores of Lake Michigan. We think you should also know about its coffee!

Manitowoc Coffee, founded in 2017, has awakened from its six month hiatus in a historic new location. This hometown favorite that started in the old Kresge building on South 8th has moved north to the revitalized Union Square development in the River North District of downtown. The new location is spacious with ample parking, a retail space and a large roasting room.

Whether you are cruising through town on your way up to Door County, on a day trip to bike the Mariner’s trail or visit the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, or disembarking the SS Badger car ferry, we think Manitowoc Coffee is worth a stop. Frankly, its the best spot in town.

The new location offers expanded seating, but fair warning because the new expanded menu is also packing the place. When we arrived for our visit it was hard to find seating for a larger party, but the staff was quick to help and made accommodations for us. The friendly staff serves guests at the tables while to-go orders can be placed at the front counter.

Manitowoc Coffee takes pride in their cafe, coffee and community!

The owner and roaster, Pete, is very proud of his espresso and he should be! You don’t often find a well balanced blend being roasted and brewed in a small town. This espresso shot had fruity notes with medium-low acidity and absolutely no bitterness. Side note, look at that beautiful rustic floor!

Caramel Frappe with Almond Milk – It takes skill to find the perfect consistency with milk alternatives. We know from experience. This frappe was smooth and delicious and caffeine free.

Caramel Latte – We may be a little obsessed with caramel, but it’s a standard by which we can judge all coffee shops. We appreciate when we find a reliable flavored latte.

Refresher – This strawberry refresher would be perfect on a warm summer day on the much anticipated rear patio shared with the adjacent yoga studio.

Cinnamon Coffee Cake Muffin – If you are in a hurry, take this delicious bakery to go. The muffin packs a punch of cinnamon and is so very moist. Two thumbs up!

Omlette – A complete breakfast. Manitowoc Coffee has a large menu serving hearty breakfast and lunch options.

Frappe – Cold and sweet, this comes in a lot of interesting flavors. This one was Heath!

Chicken Sandwich – Not overly extravagant, but very tasty and it makes a good breakfast or lunch–whichever you prefer.

Egg Sandwich on a Croissant – The buttery, flaky croissant is filled with a large fried egg and loads of tasty bacon.

Egg Sandwich on an English Muffin – Look at the size of that egg! The portions are generous so you can fill up on coffee and food.

The new location has new potential, yet the same great food.
